LIVERPOOL POLICE ATHLETIC SPORTS
Liverpool Daily Post - Tuesday 01 July 1902
The entries for the Liverpool police athletic sports, which take place on Saturday, on the ground of the Everton Football Club, Goodison Park, close to-day. The popular secretary, Sergeant J. Park, has received entries which compare favourably with the best of previous years, and an excellent festival is sure to result. Special interest centres this year in the tug-of-war competition from the fact that up to now the Liverpool police team have been winning at every contest they have entered this season. A crack team from Abertillery,  Monmouthshire, whose credentials prove them to be opponents of a high order, have entered, and a right royal “tug” will be witnessed between them and the Liverpool police team if both are left in the final. Sergeant J. Park, who captains the Liverpool police team, has got his men into the pink of condition. The entries disclose the fact that a good Irish contingent will compete, both in the flat and wheel races. The Head Constable is giving a garden party.

POLICE ATHLETIC FESTIVAL
Liverpool Daily Post - Saturday 05 July 1902
AN ENCOURAGING PROSPECT
The prospects of the seventeenth annual athletic festival in connection with the Liverpool Police Athletic Society, to be held this afternoon on the Everton football ground, Goodison Park, are distinctly auspicious. Sergeant Park, the new hon. secretary, has done his work with commendable thoroughness, and the arrangements are now practically completed. Although the number of entries in the open events, cyclists particularly, show something of a decrease, there is a substantial increase in the number of entries for members’ events, bearing evidence of the greater interest taken in the society by those for whose benefit and amusement it was founded. On the whole, the entries compare favourably with the records of previous years. It is important to learn that the track is in splendid condition, having been given extra attention out of regard for the cyclists, so that one may safely prophecy no spills, except through a rider’s own fault. The open events, it may be added, have attracted some of the best sprinters, long-distance runners, and cyclists in this part of the country. The sports will commence at two o clock prompt, and at intervals during the day selections of music will contributed and the constabulary and Cheshire Lines bands. The prizes, which are great value in aggregate, will be distributed by the Mayoress Granted fine weather, there should be a crowded attendance, for whose enjoyment an excellent afternoon’s entertainment is assured.

ATHLETIC SPORTS.
Liverpool Daily Post - Monday 07 July 1902
POLICE ATHLETIC SOCIETY.
ANNUAL FESTIVAL AT GOODISON PARK
A genial temperatureand brilliant sunshine favoured the seventeenth annual festival of the Police Athletic Society, and a crowd numbering between 12,000 and 15.000 was on Saturday afternoon attracted to the Everton Football Ground, Goodison Park. Some fears were at the outset entertained as to whether the recent edict of the Head Constable against the sale of tickets after a particular manner would jeopardize “the gate,” but thanks both to the fine weather and to the interest with which the sports are looked forward to year after year by the public generally all fears on this score proved groundless, and from the point of view of attendance, there was no real cause for complaints. As to the entries, a falling-off was noticeable in their number in the open events, the cycling more particularly, but although there was no competitor of really first-rate importance, athletes from different parts of the North of England were well represented in the sprints, long-distance, and cycling events. On the other hand, however, the members competitions showed a substantial increase in the entries-which is, after all, a valuable feature as showing the greater interest taken in the festival by the members of the society themselves. Amongst these occupying seats in the Head Constable’s enclosure were the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, the Major of Birkenhead (Mr. G. Hazlehurst), Alderman Bowring, Alderman Fred Smith, Mr. R.D. Holt, Monsignor Nugent, Canon Lester, Mr. Leonard Dunning (Head Constable), Mr. W.J. Stewart (stipendiary), Mr. T. E. Sampson (city coroner), Mr. E. Berry, C.C. Mr. J. Gaffney, Mr. T.A. Cook, Captain Strachan, Mr. J. Cummins (Head Constable of Bootle), Superintendent Cross (Seaforth), and Superintendent Jarvis (Ormskirk).
The particularly interesting features of the sports were the mile bicycle handicap (open), the one mile walking race, the tug-of-war, the mile flat race (open), and the mile-interdivisional flat scratch race. The 100 yards flat race for members’ sons was followed with extraordinary eagerness, whilst the sack and obstacle races proved exceedingly amusing. In the tug-of-war Manchester Police were drawn against and were beaten by Bellman’s A.C. owing to the absence of the Grey Abertillery (Mon.) team, Liverpool Police had a bye, and easily defeated Bellman’s. The competitions for the Poole and Waring Shields were eagerly contested, and calculated on the number of victories achieved by its members Liverpool won both trophies with a big balance of points.
The sports lasted from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m., at which time the prizes were distributed by the Lady Mayoress. At intervals during the afternoon the bands of the Constabulary and the Cheshire Lines played selections of music, which contributed materially to the enjoyment of the gathering.
